Lawmakers in Taraba have a real challenge – the continued existence of military edicts in most of the government owned establishments has been seen as a major reason behind the snail paced development of the state.

The plan? To do away with military edicts in all the public establishments, and enact laws that would kickstart the growth of state agencies, boards and parastatals.

The state legislators made this collective affirmation when the bill for the creation of the Taraba Agency for Mass Education was subjected to a second reading in the house, Monday.

The Bill which was moved by  deputy Majority Leader, Josiah Sabo Kente and seconded by Chief Whip, Danladi Gwampo, seeks to do away with the military edicts that established the agency. Kente is seeking a legal backing to enable the House do this.

According to him, “the legal instruments still being use in the state is an edict established by the military administration in 1991 hence the need to allow for the emergence of laws that would empower the agency.”

The edict, according to Kente was made by the Gongola state administration.Taraba, from your history class, was cut out from the defunct Gongola in 1991 by the military government. Kente said that “we come from a state where the largest population are illiterate and it is our responsibility to make laws that would enhance the growth of the state.”

At the end of the session, the bill was immediately referred to the standing committee on education by the House speaker Haruna Tsokwa, for the commencement of a public hearing.
